PIL Papers - Series 4 - Box 1 - Folder 1 - Danvers Centennial Celebration Committee Papers 1851-1852
The Danvers Centennial Papers were created by the Committee formed in the Town of Danvers in 1851. Included are a small booklet recording the minutes of the meetings, a few accounts detailing expenses, resolutions made by committee in response to George Peabody's offer of $20,000 to create the Peabody Institute, instructions regarding the publication of the "Account of the Centennial Celebration in Danvers, June 16, 1852," and any correspondence sent to committee members. Because Fitch Poole was also on the committee and the first Librarian of the Peabody Institute, many of these papers were stored here.
Letters came from Andrew Bigelow, James Savage, Thomas P. Field, Perley Putnam, Charles W. Upham, Lilley Eaton, Charles Sewall, Milton P. Braman, John Webster, Ebenezer Hunt, Philemon Putnam, James Fletcher, Judith Dodge Peabody Russell, Charles Moses Endicott, Dr. Andrew White, George G. Smith, P. R. Southwick, Allen Putnam, F. M. Dix and Sarah P. King.
Letters from the committee went to Rufus Choate regarding legalities of the Peabody Donation, as well to George Peabody in response to his letters.
Many of the letters to Fitch Poole regard his request for the speakers at the event to send to him copies of their words to be included in the publication "Account of the Centennial Celebration in Danvers, June 16, 1852." The speeches of some of these correspondents are included with these papers.
Judith Dodge Peabody Russell's letters to Poole focus around her memories of her brother as he grew up as well as supplying information for the biography which was included in the publication created by the committee.
The Halbard of Lieutenant Francis Peabody--included in the book--came from Charles Moses Endicott's letters.
The account of George Peabody's farewell dinner to the American Exhibitors in Oct. 1851 came from an account in these papers, as well as the concluding remarks which were published in the book.
Records of the Centennial Committee, 1852 included here. Inside the front cover are Admission tickets to celebration.
